Demons. Virginia Berridge at @McrSciFest Sat 26 Oct 2013 2pm

Demons. A free Manchester Science Festival talk.

Sat 26 Oct 2013 2pm here in Blackwell’s.

Tobacco, alcohol, drugs: what are the demons that haunt us? Public health expert Virginia Berridge explores an age-old subject often stimied by tabloid headlines.

Attitudes to public health have historically been driven by social, cultural, political, and economic and industrial factors, as well as advances in science. They have resulted in different responses to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco at different times, in different parts of the world.

From opium dens to the temperance movement, from recreational drugs to the smoking ban,Virginia reveals the socio-economic and political forces behind it all – including the growing power of pharmaceutical companies.

This event, supported by Oxford University Press, is free and will last an hour. No booking required.
